Almost hidden in Svendborg Sound, Troense might be looked over by many. What luck for those who are familiar with this little village that is hard to beat on hygge.
You mightn’t find the best beaches in Troense, but that usually isn’t on you mind when you venture along Svendborg Sound anyway really. The sound offers a break from the open water and instead delivers wonderful scenes right out of the Danish tourists catalogue. The Sound is lined with many a picturesque cottage and of those there are an abundant in Troense. Not to mention Valdemar’s castle at the end of the road leading to the west. A somewhat larger cottage it is…
If you can’t find a spot in the small marina, there are buoys for mooring nearby. Tie up, go for a dip, make yourself comfortable and watch boats of all colors and sizes drift by.
Go, See and Do:
Definitely walk or ride a bike down the road to Valdemar’s Slot. The castle and manor house are well worth it, even if you don’t actually go inside. The castle was built by the Danish King Christian the IV between 1639-1644 for his son Valdemar Christian and is still under family management. Visitors are encouraged to have a look around. If you are not into antique furniture and halls of splendour, there is a light and airy café open in the summer holidays in the Tea pavilion with a great view out over the water. This alone is a great reason to visit. In some of the old stables you might find some interesting items for your home decor and the odd horse in the stables. You can stroll between apple trees in the gardens. General information and opening times are here.
Take a detour from the main road and wander along the streets to the west of the marina for some inspiration in things hygge. The cottages, their gardens and the odd Loppedmarkt will give you a chance to feel right at home or want to make Troense your home.
Catch a ride on the small ferry Helge along the sound for a bit of nostalgia. The ferry runs from about mid-May until mid-September and stops at Svendborg, Vindebyöre, Christiansminde, Troense, Grasten and Valdemars Slot. More information and the timetable are on the jetty at the marina.
If you need to get some supplies or just go shopping, but don’t want to stay in the marina in Svendborg, and the ferry takes too long, take the short ride with the bus from Troense! Bus line 250 runs hourly just up on the main road and will get you into the centre of Svendborg. Don’t miss the great view along the sound when you cross the bridge.
From the marina you can go for a run in both directions along the main road. To the west toward the castle or to the east and then turn down Pilekrogen to go through some forests.
